Genus creates and sells added value products for livestock farming and food producers by creating advances to animal breeding through biotechnology. Its non-Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) technology is applicable across all livestock species but is only commercialised by Genus in the bovine and porcine farming sectors.

Genus' worldwide sales are made in 70 countries under the trade marks "ABS" (dairy and beef cattle) and "PIC" (pigs) and comprise semen and breeding animals with superior genetics to those animals currently in production. Customers use Genus genetics in their herds to produce offspring with greater production efficiency, milk and meat output and quality. These offspring are used to supply the global dairy and meat supply chain.

Genus' businesses currently comprise ABS and PIC International. ABS was founded in 1941 and is now the world's leading bovine genetics company. PIC was founded in 1962 and is now the world's leading supplier of breeding stock to pig producers, and has 45% market share in the Americas.

Buchanan was approached by Genus in 2000 to assist in the flotation of the Company on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange. Following the successful flotation, Genus has gone from strength to strength, acquiring synergistic businesses, steadily and impressively building the Company and its product offering of world-beating dairy, beef and pig genetics across a global stage.

Buchanan has a long standing relationship with Genus and has strategically advised on every acquisition, disposal, contract win, product launch and environmental success and issue, such as foot and mouth, in the last seven years.

Genus' City communications is supported by a strong analyst following spanning the retail, support services and biotech sectors and by a keen financial media profile.

Buchanan also advised on Genus' largest acquisition to date, the £187m acquisition of Sygen, a specialist porcine and shrimp genetics business in 2005 - a business that has been integrated successfully and has doubled the size of the Group. This transaction was accompanied by a £55m fundraising.

In November 2007, Genus raised approximately £20m through a share placing, following which it de-listed from AIM, simultaneously commencing trading on the Full List. The Company was promoted to the FTSE 250 in February 2008 and currently has a market capitalisation of £420 million.
